If ever there was a season made for adventure, its spring! Follow the rising sap to the treetops on a high ropes experience, head to the hills for uplifting views and breathe in the scent of hundreds of thousands of daffodils and bluebells.
1. Hike to the Rotunda for timeless views of Iron Bridge
Strap on your hiking boots and hike up Lincoln Hill to the Rotunda, a viewpoint built in the 1790s. The paths hidden beneath the woodland canopy are dappled with springtime light, and the view along the River Severn towards Iron Bridge is well worth tackling the 209 steps to the top for!
2. Watch the sunrise from The Wrekin
How about watching the sun rise over 17 counties? You can from the summit of The Wrekin, our beloved ‘little mountain’. The spring dawn chorus cheers you on as you climb to the 407m (1,335ft) peak, crowned by an Iron Age hillfort.
3. Be dazzled by daffodils
Telford bursts into a bright yellow carpet of daffs every spring. The town planted 170,000 bulbs in 2018 – one for each resident of the borough – and the display gets even bigger and bolder each year. Stroll through Telford Town Park’s 450 acres, pausing for a coffee by one of the sparkling pools. You might need your sunnies!
4. Stroll through bluebell-carpeted woods
There’s loads to love about Aqualate Mere, the biggest natural lake in the English Midlands. This National Nature Reserve is home to all sorts of wildlife, including warblers, otters, bats, polecats and a large heronry. But in spring, the bluebells take centre stage.
5. Swing through the trees
Get a birds-eye view of the budding springtime canopy on the Sky Reach high ropes course. It threads through the trees in Telford Town Park. Test your mettle on the climbing wall, wobble your way across suspended plank walks, and take the heart-stopping ‘Leap of faith’.
6. Jump back to Victorian times with the whole family
Spring into life during the reign of Queen Victoria at this open-air museum. Hear the furnaces roar into life, watch as iron is poured and forged and meet local folk in town and in the fields. Little ones will have a blast letting off steam in the Victorian fairground and the mining-themed play areas of Madeley Wood Co. Outdoor Adventure.
7. Shop in sprightly market towns
Our market towns are bursting at the seams with spring produce, fashion and interiors. Wellington is the place for mouth-watering food and drink, and one of England’s oldest indoor markets. Head to Newport to browse lifestyle, clothes and food shops packed to the rafters with the latest seasonal goods.
8. Brighten up someone’s spring
Treat someone special (or yourself!) to a souvenir from Telford. Take your pick from small-batch artisan gin from Moonshine and Fuggles, an iconic handmade teddy bear from Merrythought, and beautiful bouquets from Nettie of the Gorge. You can even learn to make a seasonal wreath at one of Nettie’s workshops.
