About

Lilleshall Abbey is a 12th-century Augustinian Abbey in peaceful rural setting close to the historic town of Newport in Telford.

Visit this heritage gem and discover the history of this epic abbey.  Walk in the beautiful grounds, and see up close its stunning architecture.  Explore the abbey ruins and see ornate carvings and cathedral like arch windows.

The best of the abbey ruins are centred on the church, particularly the lovely Norman processional doorway, ornamented with beautiful carvings.  And you can even ascend a stair to the gallery level to enjoy spectacular views over the church and cloistral buildings.  Find the slype, a narrow, vaulted passage with rib vaultings that lead into the monk's cemetery.

The abbey was founded by Richard de Belmeis in 1143 at Lizard, but it moved to Donnington the following year and to Lilleshall in 1148. The main buildings were constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries. These include the abbey church, sacristy, chapter house, warming room, kitchen, and refectory. To these were added the abbot's hall and parlour in the 14th century.
