The Iron Bridge is the perfect place to begin a tour of Ironbridge Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Nestled in the spectacular wooded gorge and stretching across the River Severn, is the world's first iron bridge. It is one of the greatest symbols of the Industrial Revolution and a Wonder of the Modern World.
The Iron Bridge is a mecca for all ages, attracting visitors from across the globe with its powerful and inspirational story and it is an Instagram able hot spot. It’s sheer scale is as impressive as its intricate design and innovative construction.
It is a FREE to visit attraction and our English Heritage Volunteers are on the Iron Bridge sharing their expert knowledge of the site and community with our visitors.
The world's first iron bridge was erected over the River Severn in 1779. The Iron Bridge story began in the early 18th century, in the nearby village of Coalbrookdale. Abraham Darby pioneered the smelting of iron using coke, a process that was a catalyst for the Industrial Revolution. It was Abraham Darby III who cast the ironwork for the bridge that still stands today, using the same techniques developed by his grandfather. The bridge was so successful that it gave its name to the spectacular wooded valley which surrounds it, now recognised as the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site.

The Iron Bridge sits in the heart of Ironbridge Gorge on the Wharfage. There is ample car parking and coach parking for groups and there are regular local buses too. The Iron Bridge is located on the National Cycle Network and is surrounded by miles and miles of walking trails and tracks too.
