Stay: Stay in the historic Best Western Valley Hotel located on the Banks of the River Severn and in the heart of the world famous World Heritage Site of Ironbridge Gorge. The hotels interiors are adorned with the famous encaustic tiles of Maw & Company, tiles made in Ironbridge that today are celebrated in the palaces and stately homes and cathedrals across the globe. Walk through history, there is no better way to explore the famous Gorge than on foot. And there is no better place to start that a walk over the iconic Iron Bridge, the world’s first bridge completed in 1779, made of Iron and cast from iron produced from the great Furnaces of Coalbrookdale.
See the remains of the Industrial Revolution for yourself on the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust’s 3.5km walk from Ironbridge to Blists Hill Victorian Town, one of the most popular museums in the Ironbridge Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site. The route is scattered with the ruins of blast furnaces and other industrial buildings. There are over 700 acres of woodland walks across the Gorge so you can keep exploring.
On the other side of the gorge, check out the British tile designs profiled at the Jackfield Tile Museum from Salvador Dali to William Morris. Discover why this really was the Tile Making centre of the world, walk through tile installations showcasing the tile applications from London Underground to Churches, Bars and shops. Get hands on and book onto one of the Tile Making courses run by the team at Craven Dunnill. Find out how the 150 year Craven Dunnill are still making tiles for world with installations from London to Manhattan.
Before you leave this special place make sure you treat yourself to shopping in our streets and lands packed full of independent shops from the great The Wharfage to the artisan community at Maws Craft Centre.
Don’t miss Merrythought, the UK’s oldest handmade teddy bear makers, its traditional teddy bears are made to last generations. The Bolthole is the place to go for art prints, swathes of fabric and a carefully curated range of vintage furniture. They also run workshops – fuelled by the finest coffee from local makers Iron and Fire. The array of bottles at Moonshine and Fuggles will make your eyes boggle! The owners’ travels inspire their curation of the best small-batch artisan drinks around.
Replenish your body, soul and taste buds with a weekend escape that dishes up plenty of food, drink and pampering.
Stay: Check in to Telford Hotel & Golf Resort. If period character is your thing, ask for a room in the 17th-century Darby House. Settle in for a relaxing and revitalising massages or treatment (or two), and unwind in the 15-metre pool and steam room. Golfers will appreciate the 18-hole course on the doorstep; everyone will appreciate the views across the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ironbridge Gorge and the luscious Severn Valley.
See & Do: Telford Hotel & Golf Resort is in a great spot for walks, bike rides and adventures along the gorge. It doesn’t have to be all action though! Tucked in the woodland above the gorge is The Green Wood Café. Drop in to this characterful indie coffee shop for top-notch brews and dishes made with local artisanal produce. There’s a pop-up plant shop and a nano-pub, too.
Locals rave about the Thai food at Suree’s Kitchen, which overlooks the banks of the River Severn not far from the Iron Bridge. You’ll find Suree’s along The Wharfage, which bustles with indie shops and traders.
Walk it off with a ramble along the river or hike up to Loamhole Dingle, looking out for kingfishers and spring wildflowers among the ancient woodland along the way.
Our cosy nook in the heart of England is an easy-to-reach gathering spot for friends and family from across the country. There’s loads to see and do here so get everyone together on a break that caters for all their tastes, interests and demands for a decent bed!
Stay: The Dinney has six holiday cottages, sleeping from 3 to 20 people, and The Farmhouse B&B with space for another 10 guests. Well-behaved dogs are welcome too. Many of the cottages are in converted barns while others have been specially and sympathetically built for guests. Wherever you stay, you’ll have views across the Severn Valley, Chelmarsh Reservoir or the RSPB nature reserve – so no-one feels hard done by! The Dinney was originally a dairy farm, and livestock still graze the fields and springtime chicks and ducklings still run around the place.
