5 dazzling days out in Telford’s attractions
1. Fire your imagination with a visit to the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. There’s more than enough to keep you busy for a few days at the Ironbridge Gorge Museums. Inspire little – and big – inventors at Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron. Visit the Old Furnace were iron was first smelt, changing the world forever. Inspired? Get hands-on with science and engineering at Enginuity, and refuel at The Furnace Kitchen.
2. Get a new perspective on the Iron Bridge. The world’s first bridge made of iron – and its finest, if we may say so ourselves – is also Telford’s most Instagrammable spot. The view up or down the river from the centre of this iconic bridge is a firm favourite. For something more unusual, get your shot from the bridge’s base, framing your composition with the ironwork’s unique design, colour and texture.
3. Explore the remains of the fourth-largest Roman city in Britain. At Viriconium (Wroxeter), you can travel back in time to find out what daily life was like here over 2,000 years ago. Once upon a time, this place was a city on the scale of Pompeii. Nowadays, there’s a ruined bathhouse and a reconstructed Roman townhouse to discover. Take the audio tour to truly immerse yourself in Roman times.
4. Be wowed by the home of British tile making. Jackfield Tile Museum is an absolute gem. It houses designs by William Morris and Salvador Dali. Walk through recreated tile architecture from a great British pub, a London Underground station and an ornate church. During school holidays, have a go at designing your very own tile. You’ll never see tiles the same way again!
5. Take to the skies at RAF Museum Cosford. Simulators, 4D experiences and virtual reality mean you really feel like your feet leave the ground at the Royal Air Force Museum. Back down to earth, you can marvel at the unique collection of fighters and bombers, including the world’s oldest Supermarine Spitfire Mk I.
