5 unmissable outdoors adventures in Telford
1. Watch the sunrise from the top of The Wrekin. Hike to the 407 metres (1,335ft) summit of The Wrekin – the most geologically diverse place on the planet – and you’ll be rewarded with 360 views across 20 counties in England and Wales, from Ceredigion to Yorkshire. You’ll soon see why Shropshire’s ‘little mountain’ inspired JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth.
2. Paddle along the River Severn. Once known as the River of Gold thanks to the exports that started their journeys across the world here, nowadays the Severn is a dedicated to pleasure, sport and adventure! Paddle a coracle, kayak, canoe, SUP or raft along the river for an unforgettable and unusual view of the world-famous Iron Bridge and the sights of Ironbridge Gorge.
3. Drift along the canal. Hire a narrowboat at Norbury and putter along the Shropshire Union Canal. The Shroppie, as it’s known around here, flows through some of England’s most beautiful and tranquil areas. You’ll drift past golden fields of corn, masses of nodding poppies and leafy, overhanging trees. Or you can hop aboard The Shropshire Star and soak up the view from the passenger seat.
4. Explore a nature reserve. Telford is home to 17 nature reserves. Between them, they cover an area of 1,400 acres – that’s a lot of woodland, wetland, heritage forest and natural gardens to discover! Follow Apley Woods’ sculpture trail, picnic overlooking the gorge at Lodge Field or, come springtime, stroll through bluebell-carpeted woods in wildlife-rich Aqualate Mere.
5. Refresh body and soul in Loamhole Dingle. Follow the boardwalk trail to this magical little corner of tranquillity. It’s not far from the centre of Coalbrookdale, but a world away from the hurry of everyday life. Lose yourself in this beautiful patch of ancient woodland – but keep your eyes peeled for kingfishers. Head off the beaten track to discover historic caves and a hidden waterfall.
